Jacksonville Sharks News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks and the Arena Football League announced Tuesday that Jacksonville quarterback Tommy Grady has been named the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week and Jack linebacker Alvin Ray Jackson has been named the J. Lewis Small Playmaker of the Week for Week 14. The League is honoring Grady and Jackson for their stellar performances in the Sharks' 74-41 victory over the Cleveland Gladiators on Saturday, June 27.
During Saturday's game, Grady completed his first eight passes and went on to finish a remarkable 23-of-26 for 284 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception. Grady piloted an offense that scored on all but one offensive possession, and ended the contest with a 151.8 pass efficiency rating - the third-best figure for a starting quarterback in any AFL game this season. Grady was able to effectively spread the ball around, as both Tiger Jones and London Crawford crossed the 100-yard mark and four different Sharks caught at least one touchdown pass.
In his first season in Jacksonville, Grady has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,441 yards and 71 touchdowns, ranking fifth, fourth and fourth among all AFL signal-callers in those respective categories. Including Saturday's game, Grady has now thrown at least six touchdown passes without an interception in seven of the Sharks' 13 games, including each of the last two.
Jackson spearheaded the Sharks' impressive defensive effort, as he led all players with 8.5 total tackles (six solo) and notched a partial tackle for loss. In the second quarter, Jackson anticipated Cleveland quarterback Shane Austin's throw, pulling in an interception in the end zone. After halftime, Jackson scooped up an attempted slow-roll onside kick, sprinting nine yards for a touchdown that helped the Sharks regain a two-score lead. In the final period, Jackson scooped up a fumble, a turnover that led to Jacksonville's final offensive score.
This season, Jackson has lived up to his reputation as one of the AFL's top playmakers at Jack, as he leads the Sharks with six interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He is the team's second-leading tackler with 55 stops, and has also recorded 1.5 tackles for loss and three pass breakups. Jackson also has Jacksonville's only interception return for a touchdown this season.
The Sharks have now had a total of six players receive weekly League honors in 2015. Jones was named Offensive Player of the Week in Week 3 and earned Catch of the Week honors in Week 4, while fellow wide receiver Joe Hills was named Playmaker of the Week in Week 1 and Offensive Player of the Week in Week 12.
