PCL1 Round Rock Express

Gothreaux Undone By Rough Sixth

May 23, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK - Jared Gothreaux pushed his scoreless innings streak to 13, but finally came unwound deep into a 7-2 loss to Iowa on Wednesday.

Eric Bruntlett went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jesse Garcia shelled out his ninth double, but it wasn't enough to help the Express overcome a six-run sixth by the Cubs.

Coming off of his best start of the season - eight shutout innings in a win against Memphis on May 17 - Gothreaux appeared on track for another solid outing over his first five innings.

He gave up just two singles over four innings and didn't allow a run until Iowa reliever Randy Wells singled Scott Moore home with one away in the fifth.

His Express still leading 2-1, Gothreaux unraveled in the sixth.

Mike Fontenot led off with a single and Micah Hoffpauir followed with a shot to right. Buck Coats was hit by a Gothreaux delivery to load the bases before Geovany Soto cranked a 1-2 delivery deep to right field.

Three runs scored and Soto held up at second before all three umpires converged and ruled that the ball had struck a metal beam just above the home run marker on the left field wall, giving Soto a grand slam and flipping a one-run lead into a three-run deficit.

Iowa continued hammering away, smashing out for single and two more runs and a 7-2 lead before Gothreaux picked up the final out of the six-run inning.

Before the sixth, Gothreaux hadn't allowed more than five runs in any of his previous 10 appearances (six starts).

Round Rock takes on the Cubs at The Dell Diamond for Game 4 at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday. Iowa leads the current series 2-1.

The game can be heard on 1530 AM or 1260 AM, or by logging on to www.rrexpress.com.
