Portland, OR - The Tucson Sidewinders pitching staff took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and a shutout into the ninth in a 5-2 win over the Portland Beavers on Wednesday afternoon at PGE Park. They fell one out shy of their second shutout of the season and the road trip.
Dustin Nippert, Adam Bass and Bill Murphy held the Beavers without a run or a hit through seven innings. Nippert worked the first two and struck out five. Bass went four perfect innings and struck out one and Murphy worked a perfect seventh before Royce Huffman led off the eighth inning with a slowly hit chopper to third that he beat out for Portland's first hit of the afternoon.
Mike Schultz allowed a one out double to Vince Sinisi in the ninth and a two out, two run home run to Pete Laforest to end the shutout.
Chris Carter, Jeff Salazar, Jamie D'Antona, Augie Ojeda and Rich Thompson all had RBI for Tucson. Carter and D'Antona each had two hits as did Danny Richar. Salazar's RBI came on his team leading 5th sacrifice fly of the season.
The Sidewinders and Beavers play the final game of their four game series on Thursday night at PGE Park. Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (3-3, 6.03) starts for Tucson against left-hander Ryan Ketchner (0-4, 4.17) for Portland. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
