SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Evansville Otters' defense turned a season-high four double plays Tuesday night to help Austin Gossmann to his second career complete game in a 5-1 win over the Schaumburg Boomers.
In the early part of the game, Schaumburg had two men on in each of the first two innings but failed to bring a single one home, thanks to Evansville's Gossmann and the defense.
The Otters grabbed the opportunity to strike first in the third, putting together a two-out rally. The rally started with an Elijah MacNamee single and Zach Biermann double before J.R. Davis brought both in with a two-run single.
Within the next at-bat, Steven Sensley brought Davis home on a two-run home run, the 10th home run of the season for Sensley.
Evansville walked out of the third inning with a 4-0 advantage.
In both the third and fourth, Schaumburg had multiple men on yet again but couldn't cash in on any of the opportunities.
In the fifth, Evansville added to their lead as Andy Armstrong scored on a wild pitch, lifting the Otters to a 5-0 mark.
Gossmann faced just two base runners from the fifth to the eighth, double plays ending a few opportunities for the Boomers.
Schaumburg finally struck Gossmann for a run in the ninth with a leadoff solo home run from Braxton Davidson. The comeback attempt would end two batters later with the fourth double play of the night from the Otters' defense.
The 5-1 win gave Evansville their 13th series-opening win of the season.
Gossmann advanced to 4-2 in 2022, allowing just one run on nine hits across all nine innings. The loss fell on Aaron Glickstein, who allowed all five runs on seven hits in his six full innings.
Jeffrey Baez was the sole Otter with a multi-hit day, his ninth multi-hit game of the season.
The three-game set continues Wednesday morning with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch from Wintrust Field in Schaumburg. Coverage begins on the Evansville Otters YouTube page at 10:50 a.m.
