Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports took out three games worth of frustration on the Visalia Rawhide Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. After suffering their third series sweep at the hand of the San Jose Giants, Stockton had both the pitching and the offense in top form. Starter Daniel Gossett (3-1) turned in the most impressive outing of any Ports pitcher on the season as he tossed seven innings and matched a career-high with nine strikeouts as he helped lead the way to a 7-0 Ports win, their second shutout victory of the season.
Gossett walked the first batter of the game, Chuck Taylor on four pitches. He proceeded to retire the next 11 batters in-a-row before allowing his first hit, an infield single in the fourth. Gossett allowed one more hit, a wind-aided double to Colin Bray with one out in the fifth before retiring the next seven batters in succession.
Gossett earned his third victory of the season, going seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out nine Rawhide batters for a second time on the season.
Stockton's offense, meanwhile, was hot from the start. With two on and two out in the first, Joe Bennie set the tone with a two-run single to center to give the Ports a 2-0 lead. They doubled the lead in the second on a two-run double by James Harris.
Visalia starter Ethan Elias (2-3) fell victim to a fielding error in the third as the Ports got an RBI single from Argenis Raga, scoring Alex Glenn who'd reached on the error to open the inning. Elias issued a walk and allowed a single to start the fourth and the Ports brought in another run on a Glenn RBI single to make it 6-0 and knock Elias from the game.
Elias suffered the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out four.
Stockton's final run came in the sixth as Glenn led off with a double and scored two batters later on a double by Seth Brown to run the lead to 7-0. It was the only run allowed by Rawhide reliever Miller Diaz in two-and-two-thirds innings of relief.
Cody Stull pitched the final two innings in relief for Stockton and allowed a hit in each frame, but struck out the side in the ninth to punctuate the victory.
Harris went 4-for-4 for Stockton, notching four hits in a game for the second time and marking the fifth occasion a Ports hitter turned in a four-hit performance on the season.
