Gorillas win again over Lubbock

The Amarillo Gorillas gave their fans an early Christmas present on Friday night as they thrashed their arch-rival Lubbock Cotton Kings 8-1 at The Jungle in the Amarillo Civic Center.

The lone lump of coal that the Cotton Kings would get was 15 seconds in to the game when they scored, after that the Gorillas dominated their visitors from the south with eight straight goals.

It was the Gorillas best offensive output of the season as they gained a measure of revenge for two earlier losses to the Lubbock Cotton Kings which struggled in every department all night long thank in part to tremendous pressure on the puck.

Ben Gustavson had an outstanding game for Amarillo with five assists and was seeing the ice incredibly. Brandon Carper had a pair of goals for the Gorillas, while Henry Kuster, Dorian Anneck, John Dean, Dave Rattray, Derek Hahn and Ryan Shannon picked up single tallies.

Steve DeBus posted the win in goal for Amarillo for his eighth victory of the season and made some great saves to deny the Lubbock shooters. The Rochester, Minnesota native even took one for the team as a slap shot slammed off of his mask in the second period.

The Gorillas are now 14-9 following this sweep of Southern Conference rivals the New Mexico Scorpions and the Lubbock Cotton Kings. Joe Ferras charges are among the hotest teams in the Central Hockey League with 7 wins in their last 9 starts and 8-2 overall in their last 10.

Following a break for the holidays, the Gorillas will get right back at it as they face their Northwest Division foes the Wichita Thunder on Thursday, Dec. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Jungle in the Amarillo Civic Center. It will be the second Run From Your Relatives Night with 50 cent hot dogs. It is the first visit by Wichita this season to Amarillo.

The Gorillas will follow that game up with their first game at the new fabulous Ford Center on Friday, Dec. 27 to face the Oklahoma City Blazers at 7:30 p.m. The weekend is concluded on Saturday, Dec. 28 when the Gorillas face the Wichita Thunder at Kansas Coliseum.
