Buzzards blast Saints, win two at home

EL PASO, Texas – Teddy bears, hats and Russ Guzior rained from the heavens as the El Paso Buzzards continued their fast, furious play and defeated the San Angelo Saints 5-3 on Saturday. Guzior had a hat trick and an assist, center Jeff Scharf had a short-handed goal and three assists and defenseman Rhett Dudley had two assists for the victory. Buzzards' goaltender Blaine Russell made 27 saves to earn the win. This is the Buzzards' second-consecutive win overall and at home.

Scharf started the Buzzards scoring barrage with a short-handed goal, beating Saints' goaltender Scott Reid at 5:55 in the first period. Guzior and Dudley assisted on Scharf's goal. After the Saints' Chris Peach tied the game, the floodgates opened. Guzior scored his first of three goals at 11:31, assisted by Scharf and Dudley. Scharf won the faceoff, sent it back to Dudley who ripped a shot that deflected off of Guzior's stick in for a goal. Upton added to the Buzzards' lead a minute later with wicked wrist shot to give the Buzzards a 3-1 lead. Guzior capped the first period scoring for the Buzzards with one-timer from Scharf to give the Buzzards a 4-1 lead.

In the second period, Guzior wasted no time getting the Buzzards back in the scoring column. Guzior received a pass from Scharf to bury a shot from the nearside slot 24 seconds into the period to give the Buzzards a 5-2 lead. Brad Cook scored a power play goal for the Saints, but that was all Russell would allow as the Buzzards held on for the victory.

The win lifts the Buzzards to 8-16-2 overall and 6-9-1 at the Nest, seven points behind of New Mexico. San Angelo drops to 11-20-1 overall and 2-9-0 on the road. The Buzzards now lead the season series 3-2-0.
