Gomez, Leenhouts Tabbed Year-End All-Stars
September 7, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Ore. - Volcanoes Miguel Gomez and Drew Leenhouts were named to the 2015 Northwest League Year-End All-Star Team the league announced on Saturday.
Salem-Keizer was one of six teams to have multiple players selected, as no team had more than two players named to the squad.
Miguel Gomez - in his first professional season in the United States - batted .319 for Salem-Keizer. The Dominican Republic-native's fourth season in the Giants system was headlined by a 22-game hitting streak which set a Volcanoes franchise record and fell just four games shy of a 53-year old Northwest League record.
Gomez paced Salem-Keizer's league-leading offense, ranking second in the league in average, first in hits (87), first in RBIs (51), first in total bases (121) and struck out at the second-lowest rate (once every 12.22 at bats).
Drew Leenhouts rebounded from a tough 2014 campaign with Salem-Keizer, to compile the best statistical year of his four seasons in the Giants organization. Although he fell shy of his 9-2 record with the Volcanoes in 2013, Leenhouts posted a 2.37 ERA, the best of his career and good for second in the Northwest League.
The tall lefty from Franklin, Mass. tied for the league lead in wins (7), as well as ranking among the top five in innings pitched (76.0), WHIP (1.26) and opponent average (.254). Of Leenhouts' 14 starts with Salem-Keizer, 10 of them saw him go at least five innings and give up no more than two earned runs. He finished the regular season on a scoreless streak of 13 innings.
Both Gomez and Leenhouts were also selected as mid-season Northwest League All-Stars and competed in the All-Star Game in Spokane, Wash. on August 4.
Everett's Drew Jackson was named league MVP, Carlos Hernandez of Hillsboro was the pitcher of the year, and returning manager Rob Mummau was manager of the year for Everett.
