Goldschmidt sets marks in Osprey rout of Billings

Missoula PaddleHeads News Release

MISSOULA, MT - Paul Goldschmidt was threatening to etch his name all over the Missoula Osprey record book. The threat has now officially become a promise.

Goldschmidt set two new single-season standards, and tied a single-game record with six RBIs, as the Osprey beat the Billings Mustangs, 13-2, in front of 2,085 fans on Tuesday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.

Goldschmidt hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning to score a run, then added a RBI double - his 26th two-bagger of the season, breaking the old team record held by Lyle Overbay since 1999 - to cap off a five-run fourth inning. The first baseman would then add a grand slam to the night, becoming the fourth Osprey player to drive in six runs in a game, and with the home run - his 17th of the season - broke Jesus Cota's single-season roundtripper mark set in 2001.

Chris Owings added three hits, including his second home run of the season, drove in three runs and scored three times for the Osprey, who pounded out 13 hits for the second straight night. Goldschmidt, Bobby Stone (two RBIs, now at 67 for the season) and Bobby Borchering each had two hits, while Errol Hollinger doubled home a pair of runs. Raywily Gomez and Henry Zabala each singled and scored twice for Missoula.

All of that offense was plenty for Miguel Pena (3-5) and three relievers to make stand up. Pena scattered five hits and four walks, allowing just a fifth-inning run to pick up his third straight win. Kevin Eichhorn allowed an unearned run, but struck out the side in the sixth, while Miles Reagan threw two hitless innings and Ryan Robowski pitched around a single in the ninth to finish off the win.

The Osprey (18-17, 39-34) moved within a game of first-place Great Falls in the Pioneer League's North Division. The Voyagers split a pair with the Helena Brewers, winning the first game, 4-2, and dropping the nightcap, 4-3.

The Osprey will wrap up their 2009 regular season home schedule with Fan Appreciation Night on Wednesday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. Charles Brewer (7-2) will get the start for the Osprey, while Oscar Castro will start for the Mustangs.

Tickets for Wednesday's game, and the North Division playoff game on September 12, can be obtained by calling the Osprey at (406) 543-3300, stopping by the Osprey Team Store at 412 W. Alder, or ordering online at www.missoulaosprey.com.
