Goldeyes Take Rubber Game from Canaries

FARGO, ND - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-7) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 5-3 at Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Goldeyes served as the home team.

Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Kevin Lachance came back from 0-2 to work a full count. On the eighth pitch of his at bat, Lachance smacked an opposite-field solo home run to right that gave Winnipeg a 3-2 lead.

Logan Hill led off the bottom of the eighth with a line drive home run to right-centre that made it 5-3.

Victor Capellan worked a perfect top of the ninth to earn his second save of the year. It was also Capellan's 66th save in the American Association, moving him into second place on the league's all-time list. Capellan is just four saves behind the league record held by Kris Regas (70).

The Canaries (9-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Alay Lago doubled to left-centre with two outs and came home on a Damek Tomscha single through the left side.

Winnipeg answered back in the bottom half on a two-run single to left-centre from Kyle Martin. Lachance and Darnell Sweeney set the table with back-to-back singles that opened the inning.

Lachance led off the bottom of the third with a single to centre, stole second, and came home with the Goldeyes' third run when Eric Wood singled to right.

Andrew Ely hit a bloop triple down the right field line leading off the top of the fifth and came home two batters later when Lago's groundball to third resulted in an errant throw to the plate. Lago went to second on the play and scored the tying run when Tomscha singled to right.

Nate Antone (1-0) picked up the win in relief with a scoreless top of the seventh.

Jose Jose pitched a scoreless eighth in his first appearance of the season.

Goldeyes' starter Kevin McGovern took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits in six-plus innings. McGovern walked none and struck out nine.

Kevin Folman (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Canaries, allowing Lachance's home run in the seventh.

Sioux Falls' starter Sam Bragg also took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over five innings. Bragg walked one and struck out two.

Jonathan Moroney hit the Goldeyes' first triple of the season in the bottom of the fourth, and has hit safely in nine straight games. Lachance finished with three hits and three runs scored. Goldeyes' pitching matched a season-high with 12 combined strikeouts.
