Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Game 1 - Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 14 Winnipeg Goldeyes 9

It just gets worse for the slumping Winnipeg Goldeyes.

The Goldeyes blew an 8-2 lead after three innings and fell 14-9 in nine innings to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in front of 7,148 spectators in the first game of a doubleheader at Canwest Park Thursday night.

It was a game the Goldeyes had in the bag, but the bullpen collapsed, blew its 10th save of the year and the Goldeyes fell to 43-46 on the season.

Fargo opened the scoring in the first as leadoff man Mike Coles hit a solo homer to left off Goldeyes starter Jason Mackintosh. But the Goldeyes answered with a run of their own as Juan Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to score Donzell McDonald from third.

The Goldeyes made it 4-1 in the second as Vince Harrison singled, stole second and scored on a double by Dee Brown. Brown scored on a double by Price Kendall and Kendall scored on a single by McDonald.

Fargo scored a run in the third, but the Goldeyes scored four times in the bottom of three as Diaz doubled, Justin Justice singled him home, Alen walked and Vince Harrison hit a three-run homer.

But the RedHawks started to pick away at the lead. Carlo Cota hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 8-4. After the Goldeyes scratched home a run in the fifth, Fargo scored three in the sixth to make it 9-7.

In the seventh, with the Goldeyes only three outs away from a Game 1 victory, closer Bobby Korecky gave up a two-run homer to Jeremiah Piepkorn to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

With the Goldeyes bullpen spent in the ninth, Fargo scored five runs to put an exclamation point on a come-from-behind victory.

Casey Hoorelbeke (10-5, 1.46 ERA) was the winning pitcher while Chad Benefield (0-3, 3.23) suffered the loss. Both teams finished with 12 hits.

Game 2 - Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 8 Winnipeg Goldeyes 3

The second game went much like the way the first game ended.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes were thumped 8-3 by the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in Game 2 of the Thursday night doubleheader.

After the two teams exchanged runs in the first inning, Fargo took the lead with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Eric Campbell hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning.

The Goldeyes scratched across a pair of runs in the ninth.

Winnipeg managed just four hits in the game.

Goldeyes starter Antony Bello went five innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. He took the loss.

Fargo starter Matt Zoltak pitched a complete game for the win.

The Goldeyes were swept by the RedHawks and drop to 1-4 during this nine-game home stand. Fargo outscored Winnipeg 22-10 in the two games.

Winnipeg is now four games of the Joliet JackHammers for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northern League with 10 games remaining.

This six-game, four-day series continues Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m. and great seats are available by visiting any Ticketmaster location or by calling 780-3333.
