\'Hammers Maul \'Cats 9-4; Move into Third Place

GARY, IN - Roberto Mena collected four hits and Brad Correll drove in four as the Joliet JackHammers (48-43) moved into third place with a 9-2 victory Friday night over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (47-43) at U. S. Steel Yard. The JackHammers evened up the season series at 4-4 with the RailCats with six games remaining between the two clubs.

Joliet scored six times over the first four frames against Nolan Nicholson (5-5). A three run second was highlighted by a Jonathan Wyatt run scoring double and an RBI single by Correll to push the lead out to 4-0. The JackHammers added two more in the sixth on back-to-back fielder's choices by Rios and Correll after Mena and Wyatt doubled in the frame.

Todd Privett (9-4) won his fifth straight decision, working six solid frames for the victory. The lefty worked in and out of trouble, stranding eight runners on base. Privett allowed two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

The RailCats picked up their two runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-2. Mike Massaro singled and Jay Pecci walked with two away. Cristian Guerrero and Randall Simon followed with back-to-back run scoring singles for the two Gary tallies.

Joliet pushed the game out of reach in the eighth with more runs off Aaron Cook. Rios delivered a bases loaded double, scoring two. Correll followed up the double with a single, plating Rios for his fourth run batted in of the night.

Nicholson was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings.

The JackHammer bullpen went the final three frames, allowing two ninth inning runs on a bases loaded double by Louis Ott for the 4-2 final.

Wyatt, Rios and Correll went a combined 7-13 in the game with eight runs batted in and four runs scored.

The JackHammers and RailCats will continue their three game set tomorrow night in Gary. Rory Shortell (3-8) will go opposite Willie Glen (10-2). First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. with a 5:50 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
