Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Three days after Valentine's Day, Winnipeg fans received a pretty sweet present.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the return of third baseman Brent Metheny. There are now 14 players on the pre-season roster, split evenly between pitchers and position players.
Metheny, 28, had a career year in 2008, batting .357 with 10 home runs and 57 runs batted in. Along the way, he led the league by hitting in 27-straight and reaching base in 46-straight games, the former tying Luis Ortiz's club record.
Tops on the Goldeyes in hitting, on-base (.453) and slugging percentages (.557) and top three in the league in all three categories, Metheny was also top five in doubles and stolen bases. He played in his second-straight all-star game, picked up two Player of the Week honours en route to winning NL Player of the Month for June and was voted by Goldeyes fans as the Rogers Player of the Year.
In two years with Winnipeg, Metheny has a .329 average, good for second all-time in franchise history, with 31 home runs, 127 RBI and 42 stolen bases.
Training camp opens May 1 at Canwest Park.
FISH FOOD: Reliever Cristian Mendoza became a member of his third Canadian team today when his rights were dealt to the expansion Victoria Seals of the Golden League for a player to be named later. Mendoza arrived in Winnipeg last April after spending the three previous seasons with Quebec of the CanAm League.
