Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - Manager Greg Tagert and the Gary SouthShore RailCats will host their annual open player tryout Wednesday, April 29 at U. S. Steel Yard. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. for position players and 11 a.m. for pitchers. There is no registration fee.
The RailCats have signed two players out of the open tryout since 2003, adding two-year starter Dan Soria in 2003 and outfielder Mike Coles in 2006. Soria retired after the 2004 season to become a police officer in his hometown of East Chicago, while Coles has gone on to enjoy two successful seasons with the Frontier League's Windy City Thunderbolts after helping the RailCats to the Northern League Championship Series in 2006.
Players interested in participating in the open tryout must arrive in baseball attire and supply their own wooden bats, gloves and cleats, and catchers must bring their own gear. The RailCats will supply only batting helmets and baseballs.
Players can register at U. S. Steel Yard beginning at 9:30 a.m., although pitcher registration will not begin until 11 a.m. The RailCats will invite selected players back for a second tryout as necessary.
