WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Kevin McAvoy on Thursday.

McAvoy (pronounced MACK-uh-voy) has pitched for the Double-A Eastern League's Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) each of the past three seasons. In 2018, McAvoy struck out 84 and allowed just seven home runs over 91.1 total innings, splitting time between Portland and the High-A Carolina League's Salem Red Sox. The Syracuse, New York native was 6-9 with a 4.28 ERA in 21 starts and one relief appearance for the Sea Dogs in 2017. McAvoy finished 13th in the Eastern League in ERA, and allowed three or fewer earned runs in 14 of his 21 starts. On August 8th, 2017, McAvoy carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Richmond, and eventually completed eight shutout innings while notching the victory.

"I'm hoping Kevin can impact our rotation in a positive way," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "I think he has the stuff to be a real horse in the American Association."

McAvoy is entering his sixth season of professional baseball, and is 26-37 with one save and a 4.81 ERA in 107 appearances, 96 of them as a starting pitcher. The 25-year-old has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 66 of his 96 career starts, and logged 100.0-plus innings three straight years from 2015-17. McAvoy has yielded just 30 home runs in 499.2 career innings (0.5 home runs per nine innings), and has induced 1.84 ground outs for every air out (Major League Baseball's average GO/AO ratio in 2018 was 1.03).

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound McAvoy was drafted by the Red Sox in the fourth round in 2014 out of Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island. McAvoy was a combined 21-4 with a 2.97 ERA for the Bryant Bulldogs from 2012-14 where he was a teammate of Goldeyes' relief pitcher Brandon Bingel.

The Goldeyes now have 25 players under contract for the 2019 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 4th.
