Goldeyes Reunite with Canadian, Two-Time Champion

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed third baseman Wes Darvill on Wednesday.

A key member of the Goldeyes' 2016 and 2017 American Association championship teams, Darvill returns to Winnipeg for a third overall season.

Following an all-star campaign with the Goldeyes in 2017, Darvill's contract was purchased by the Los Angeles Dodgers' that winter. The Richmond, British Columbia native appeared in 58 games across three levels of the Dodgers' organization, reaching Triple-A for the first time in his career with the Pacific Coast League's Oklahoma City Dodgers. After returning from a mid-season injury, Darvill helped the Tulsa Drillers win the Double-A Texas League championship. It was the fifth time in the last six seasons the 27-year-old has won a championship in professional baseball.

"I'm very excited to have Wes back for 2019!" said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "Wes is a very good player both offensively and defensively, and sets a great example to the new players as to how we like the game played in Winnipeg."

In 2017, Darvill finished 12th in the American Association with a .309 batting average, while adding 53 runs, 19 doubles, four home runs, 49 RBI, and 30 stolen bases (in 33 attempts). A left-handed batter and right-handed fielder, Darvill was voted to both the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game and the American Association Postseason All-Star Team as the league's top third baseman. Darvill then hit safely in all nine of the Goldeyes' playoff games (13-for-35, .371), en route to a second consecutive American Association title.

During his two seasons in Winnipeg, Darvill has struck out in just 11 percent of his American Association plate appearances. Defensively, Darvill has compiled a .953 fielding percentage at third base, while handling more chances (507) than anyone in the league at the position.

Darvill was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fifth round in 2009 out of Brookswood Secondary School (Langley, British Columbia), and is heading into his 11th season of professional baseball. A lifetime .245 hitter in 809 games, Darvill has averaged 72 runs, 23 doubles, 58 RBI, 23 stolen bases, and 57 walks per 162 contests. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Darvill has reached the Double-A level three times, and was assigned to the prestigious Arizona Fall League by the Cubs in 2013.

Additionally, the Goldeyes have traded infielder Tucker Nathans to the Can-Am League's les Aigles de Trois-Rivieres in exchange for cash. Nathans hit .288 with 12 home runs and 33 RBI in 68 games for the Goldeyes last season.

The Goldeyes now have 20 players under contract for the 2019 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 4th.
