Lake County Fielders News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (16-10) scored five runs in the top of the eighth to beat the Lake County Fielders (8-17) 8-2 and take the series.

LHP Matt Schweitzer relieved Zach Ward in the seventh; Schweitzer and the Fielders retired five of the first six batters faced. But all fell loose after three consecutive RBIs from Vince Harrison, Dee Brown and Jeremy Hamilton. Josh Asanovich then stepped up to the plate and crushed a two-run homer, his third in as many games to put the Goldeyes ahead by six runs.

Ryan Falcon came in the ninth to pitch a one-two-three inning. Amos Ramon led off the top of the ninth with a walk. Joe Ramos then crushed his first home run of the year; a two-run shot over the centerfield wall. But that wasn't enough to close the deficit.

Offensively, the Fielders got on the board first with Ramos scoring on an error by the Goldeyes first baseman. Brian McFall tacked one on in the fifth on a fielder's choice. Anthony Esquer and Joe Ramos both went two for four on the night and Brian McFall hit his first double as a Fielder, with Cody Strait also contributing a double to the Fielders eight hits of the night.

Schweitzer took the loss for the Fielders, going 2.0 innings giving up five earned runs and striking out three. Goldeyes Chris Salamida got the win while giving up six hits and two earned runs. The Fielders got a solid start from Zach Ward who went six innings giving up six hits, two earned runs and six strikeouts.

The Fielders will send John Brownell to the mound tomorrow in their first home game against first place Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 7:00PM at Carthage College.
