Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Battle of the Sexes turned out to be a one-side affair.
Chicago pitchers Nikki Nemitz, Jessica Sallinger and Kristina Thorson combined on a one-hit shutout Thursday as the Bandits beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 5-0, in an exhibition fastpitch softball game at Road Ranger Stadium. The Bandits, members of National Pro Fastpitch, were an out away from a no-hitter when former Chicago Cub Randall Simon singled in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Northern League's RiverHawks.
The Bandits led from the first inning on. Samantha Findlay doubled to center field to drive in a run with two outs. In the second, Amberly Waits tripled in a two-out run. Chicago added three unearned runs in the fourth inning.
Nemitz struck out five and walked one in three innings for the win. Thorson struck out six in two innings.
Todd Andrews, one of two male fastpitch hurlers signed for the day by the RiverHawks, lasted two innings and took the loss.
The RiverHawks open a three-game series at Gary at 7 p.m. Friday.
