Goldeyes Fall in Tight Series-Opener

ST. PAUL, MN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (17-17) lost 3-2 to the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field on Friday night.
The Saints (25-10) made a three-run bottom of the first stand up. The inning started with a controversial call at first base. Saints leadoff hitter Alonzo Harris hit a groundball into the hole at shortstop that was gloved by Maikol Gonzalez . While the ensuing throw to first pulled Jacob Rogers off the bag, it appeared Rogers tagged Harris in the back before reaching first. Harris was ultimately ruled safe, and the Saints took advantage on a Nate Hanson RBI double, an Angelo Songco RBI triple, and a Tony Thomas RBI single.
"This was a good ballgame," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth . "Two good teams got at it and battled. We just couldn't get a big hit to swing things our way. It was a great pitching performance from both sides. The bullpen did exactly what we needed them to do, and got the outs we needed to get. It's a shame we couldn't put up more offence for Duke."
Goldeyes' starter Duke von Schamann (2-4) settled in after the first, and retired 12 batters in a row from the second inning into the sixth. von Schamann took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits in six innings. von Schamann walked two and struck out five.
"He (von Schamnn) finished his pitches," said Vaeth. "He became more aggressive after the first inning. He was short on the ball and left some balls up in the zone, but he got better as the game went on. Tonight we just didn't do enough offensively."
The Goldeyes pulled within one run in the top of the third when Josh Romanski hit a two-out, two-run double off the top of the wall in right-centre field.
Saints' starter Mark Hamburger (6-0) protected the lead over eight and two-thirds innings to earn the win. Hamburger allowed two earned runs on eight hits, walking two, and striking out seven.
Wes Darvill doubled with one out in the ninth inning to put the tying run in scoring position. Two batters later, Hamburger was relieved by left-hander Caleb Thielbar who retired pinch hitter Carlton Tanabe on a flyball to centre field that ended the game. Thielbar earned his first save of the year.
Conor Spink, Cameron McVey, Eric Eadington, and Brandon Shimo combined for two perfect innings in relief of von Schamann.
David Rohm, Reggie Abercrombie, and Ridge Hoopii-Haslam each had multiple hits. Rohm has hit safely in eight games in a row.
The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Ethan Carnes (2-1, 4.46) takes on left-hander Kody Knaus (2-1, 3.63). Saturday's game will also be carried on 89.5 "The Lake" in Kenora, Ontario.
