WINGNUTS TAKE SET OPENER
The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Sioux City Explorers 6-3 in the opener of their three-game series last night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. After squandering a couple of chances in the first two innings, Wichita grabbed the lead in the third, when T.J. Mittelstaedt tripled in a pair. Richard Prigatano followed later in the inning with an RBI double to make it 3-0. Tim Brown cruised for much of the night for the Wingnuts, holding Sioux City to two hits in his first five innings. The visitors got to him for a pair of two-out runs in the sixth, as they put together three straight knocks to pull within a run. The Wichita righty bounced back to retire the side in order in the seventh, his last inning on the night. Wichita picked up some insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Prigatano hit a solo home run, and two more in the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles by Brent Clevlen and Mittelstaedt. The Explorers got one run against the Wingnuts bullpen in the eighth on a solo homer by Ralph Henriquez, but Frankie Reed came on in the ninth to slam the door shut and earn his seventh save of 2016.
BROWN BACK ON TRACK
After surrendering double digit hits and six runs or more in his last three starts, righty Tim Brown got back to the form he showed early in the season last night, yielding two runs on five hits in seven innings. The veteran turned in his third quality start of the year, and retired the Explorers in order in four of his seven frames. Brown had yielded just two hits over five and two-thirds scoreless innings before Sioux City strung together three straight two-out knocks in the sixth to plate their only two runs against him on the night. The St. Louis, Mo., native also did not walk a batter, and has yet to yield a walk in his first seven starts of 2016, covering 47.0 innings.
LONG BEACH DUO DELIVERS
The two former Long Beach State Dirtbags on the Wichita roster, T.J. Mittelstaedt and Richard Prigatano, played a huge part in Wichita's victory last night. Mittelstaedt drove in three, pushing his team-leading RBI total to 27, while Prigatano was a single shy of the cycle and drove in two of his own. Prigatano is now third on the club with 24 runs batted in this year.
