Goldeyes Fall Flat against Saints

August 10, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes were very happy to put St. Paul's CHS Field in the rear view mirror of the team bus.

On Monday night in front of 8,416 witnesses in Minnesota, the Goldeyes were beat 7-1 by the St. Paul Saints, as the home side completed a three-game sweep of the Fish that left Winnipeg 8 ½ games behind the Joplin Blasters in the American Association wild card race. The Goldeyes have now lost three straight games and are 33-40 on the season.

This one was close in the early going as both starters, Matt Jackson for Winnipeg and Robert Coe for St. Paul, breezed through the first three innings. Coe allowed one hit while Jackson gave up none.

But then, in the fourth, St. Paul did what it's done all series. The Saints put up a crooked number, this time three runs on three hits. The big blow was a three-run double by Ryan Lashley, who finished the game with two hits and four runs batted in.

St. Paul went on to put up three more in the seventh and one in the eighth and the Goldeyes didn't have an answer.

Winnipeg scored its only run in the top of the seventh when, with two out, Reggie Abercrombie walked and Brad Boyer doubled to score Abercrombie from first.

And that was it. The Goldeyes, who were beaten 7-4 and 8-5 in the first two games of the series, were shut down by Coe and relievers Michael Zouzalik (2.23 ERA) and Alex Sogard (2.60 ERA). Winnipeg went 1-6 in St. Paul this season.

The Goldeyes finished with one run on four hits, while St. Paul had seven runs on nine hits. Boyer led the Goldeyes with two hits and a run batted in. Abercrombie reached base three times, on two walks and a single, and scored the Goldeyes only run.

Saints starter Coe (8-3, 2.77 ERA) got the win while Jackson (6-7, 4.99 ERA) was tagged with the loss. Jackson gave up four runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings while reliever Rett Varner (4.36 ERA) allowed two runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning of work. Jailen Peguero (3.98 ERA) gave up a run on two hits during his inning of relief in the eighth.

The Goldeyes got on the bus right after the game and started driving north to Winnipeg. The Fish will open a three-game series with the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday night at Shaw Park. Left-hander Kyle Anderson (3-5, 5.09 ERA) is slated to get the start for the Goldeyes.

Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
