Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes are facing playoff elimination after falling 5-2 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Friday before a crowd of 5,545 at Canwest Park. Now trailing 2-1 in the best-of-five series, Winnipeg will have to win at home Saturday afternoon and then win in Gary on Sunday evening to stay alive.
Tony Cogan (1-0) tossed an absolute gem, allowing both runs on six hits while fanning six and walking one for the complete game victory. Dustin Pease (0-1) was touched for four runs on six hits in just four innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
Gary opened the scoring in the third on back-to-back doubles by Eric McNamee and Rob Marconi. After stealing third, Marconi scored on a Jay Pecci sacrifice fly. It became 4-0 in the fourth. With two out and Steve Haake aboard on a lead-off single, McNamee hammered one deep to left for his first career home run.
Held to just one hit through four, the Goldeyes showed some life in the fifth. With one out, Antoin Gray reached when he was hit by a pitch. Dustin Richardson followed with a double to the gap in right centre and it was 4-1. After a Max Poulin ground out moved Richardson to third, Fehlandt Lentini singled to make it 4-2. It almost became 4-3 one batter later when Demetrius Heath hit a hard grounder down the left field line that was destined for the corner, but Tanner Townsend made an amazing diving stop and threw Heath out on a bang-bang play.
With the Goldeyes bullpen keeping the RailCats off the board, Winnipeg threatened in the seventh when Richardson and Max Poulin singled with one out. Lentini grounded one down the third base line, but Townsend snared it, stepped on third to get Richardson and then threw across the diamond to get Lentini in an inning-ending double play.
Gary concluded the scoring in the eighth off Zach Baldwin. Cristian Guerrero doubled to lead it off, moved up on a Haake single and scored on a Mike Reese sacrifice fly.
This series continues Saturday with a special matinee start time of 1:30. Brandon Kintzler is up for Winnipeg while southpaw Brian Forystek is expected for Gary. Great seats are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or by visiting ticketmaster.ca.
