JACKSON, TN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (28-30) lost 6-4 to the Houston Apollos at The Ballpark at Jackson on Thursday night.

The Apollos (8-48) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run top of the first. An RBI double from Aaron Takacs drove in Jordan Pontius with the game's first run. Alvaro Gonzalez made it 2-0 with an RBI single, and was followed by an RBI groundout from Yelier Peguero. Gonzalez scored the fourth run of the inning on a two-out wild pitch.

Hudson Bilodeau stretched the lead to 5-0 in the top of the second with a two-out, RBI double.

Kyle Martin led off the bottom of the second with a single up the middle, stole second, and scored two batters later on a Wes Darvill double to left-centre.

Tyler Hill drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the third, stole second, and came home on a two-out, RBI single from Martin that pulled the Goldeyes within 5-2.

The Apollos re-extended their lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth on a Goldeyes' error that plated Ian Yetsko.

Martin ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Goldeyes brought the tying run to the plate before Apollos' right-hander Keisy Portorreal recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Portorreal retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to record his first save of the season.

Matthew Cronin (2-4) started for the Apollos and picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 5.2 innings. Cronin walked five and struck out two.

Eduard Reyes (5-6) started for Winnipeg and took the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits in one inning. Reyes walked two and struck out one.

Rookie right-hander Dylan Burns was signed before the game and made his professional debut with two and two-thirds innings of long relief. Burns allowed just one earned run and did not issue a walk. Ken Frosch worked one and one-third scoreless relief innings, while Austin Henrich allowed one unearned run in three innings of relief.

The Goldeyes open a three-game series against the Kansas City Monarchs on Friday night. First pitch from The Ballpark at Jackson is at 6:35 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca

In the coming days, the Winnipeg Goldeyes will contact Season Ticket and Mini Pack holders with ticket options for the remainder of the 2021 season, and will be given first priority on seat selection. Individual tickets will go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, July 27th at 9:00 a.m.
