Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (54-40) dropped the first of a three-game series to the St. Paul Saints (58-36) 18-2 at CHS Field on Tuesday night.

With the loss, Winnipeg is now only one game ahead of the Laredo Lemurs in the American Association wild card race and four games back of the Saints in the North Division.

After a scoreless first inning, the Saints jumped ahead with a four-run bottom second. Nate Hanson hit a leadoff single and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice, and Alonzo Harris hit a three-run home run to make it a 4-0 game.

Casio Grider bunted in the top fourth to extend his safe hitting streak to nine consecutive games, but neither team scored until the sixth inning. Willie Cabrera drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a David Rohm double and made it home on an error charged to Breland Almadova. Rohm later scored on a Grider base hit to cut the Saints' lead to 4-2.

But the Saints battled back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and eight in the bottom seventh. St. Paul scored on a pair of RBI singles in the eighth, walked in a run with the bases loaded, added another on an RBI single and two on a double and rounded out the inning with two more runs.

In the top eighth, David Rohm drew a two-out walk to give the Goldeyes their 438th offensive walk this season, which ties an American Association single-season record the Gary SouthShore RailCats set in 2012.

The Saints put up a three-run homer in the bottom eighth and set the Goldeyes down in order in the ninth to take the game 18-2.

Winnipeg starter Duke von Schamann (8-7, 4.78) took the loss after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits through 5 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked three, marking only the second time this season he failed to walk two or less batters in 19 starts. He has never walked more than three batters in a start for the Goldeyes.

Brandon Shimo pitched the final two scoreless outs in the sixth. Ethan Carnes gave up eight runs on six hits through the first two outs in the seventh. Ridge Hoopii-Haslam made his second professional pitching appearance and gave up the three-run homer in the eighth.

St. Paul starter Corey Williams (2-2, 4.56) gave up two runs on four hits through 5 2/3 innings for the win. He struck out five and walked four.

The Goldeyes activated Jacob Rogers from the disabled list before the game. He pinch-hit for Reggie Abercrombie in the eighth and drew a walk. Willie Cabrera played the field for the first time since returning from an injury last week. St. Paul's Angelo Songco made his return to the lineup after spending a month on the inactive list.

The Goldeyes and Saints will play the second game of the series on Wednesday night at 7. Left-hander Kevin McGovern (7-3, 3.72) will face the Saints' right-hander Mark Hamburger (12-4, 3.21).

Tickets for all Goldeyes home games are available at the Shaw Park box office or by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting ticketmaster.ca. All Goldeyes games are broadcast live on 93.7 CJNU and at cjnu.ca.
