Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Almost three months after it was conducted, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have finalized one of the best trades in franchise history.

Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that pitcher Joe Brown and the reversionary rights to pitcher Howard Pence are the players to be named later in the August 17 deal that saw Winnipeg acquire southpaw starter Luis Villarreal from Joliet.

Villarreal made two regular season starts for the Goldeyes, winning both while posting a 2.38 earned run average. As good as he was in those two games, he was even better in the playoffs as Winnipeg took Fargo-Moorhead to five games in the West Division Final.

Blanking the RedHawks for 13-plus innings before being charged with two runs in Sunday's 3-2 series-ending loss, Villarreal went 1-0 in the playoffs with a stingy 1.32 ERA and an even stingier .071 opposition batting average.

Brown went 2-3 with a 3.60 ERA in 36 appearances, including two starts. Pence was 7-4 with a 2.34 ERA and one save in 38 relief appearances before the Houston Astros purchased his contract in late August.
