Goldeyes Boost Lineup with Four-Time All-Star
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed veteran first baseman/outfielder Reynaldo Rodriguez on Friday.
Rodriguez appeared in 17 games last summer for the Mexican League's Bravos de Leon, and most recently hit .346 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 22 contests for the Venezuelan Winter League's Aguilas de Zulia. The Cartagena, Colombia native is a four-time all-star in the affiliated minor leagues, and has reached the Triple-A level in four different seasons throughout his career.
"I'm very excited to add Reynaldo to our club," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "I really believe he will be a big-time run producer for us."
Rodriguez originally signed with the New York Yankees as an international free agent in 2003, and started his professional career the following year in the Rookie level Dominican Summer League. During four seasons in the Yankees' farm system from 2004-07, Rodriguez hit a combined .286.
After missing the 2008 season due to injury, Rodriguez latched on with the independent Golden League's Yuma Scorpions in 2009 where he hit .335 with six home runs and 48 RBI in 74 games, while earning the circuit's Rookie of the Year Award. Rodriguez was then ranked by Baseball America as the top prospect in all of independent baseball for 2009.
On the heels of his 2009 campaign, Rodriguez returned to affiliated ball in 2010 when the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract from Yuma. The 6-foot, 195-pound Rodriguez was assigned to the Low-A South Atlantic League where he batted .281 with 20 doubles, 14 home runs, and 55 RBI in 85 games for the Greenville Drive. Rodriguez split time with four different Red Sox' affiliates in 2011, and combined for a .286 average, 39 doubles, 18 homers, and 77 RBI in 110 games. A portion of Rodriguez's work in 2011 included a 56-game stint with the Salem Red Sox that garnered all-star honours in the High-A Carolina League.
Rodriguez earned all-star recognition again in 2012, this time while playing for the Double-A Eastern League's Portland Sea Dogs. That same season, Rodriguez reached the Triple-A level for the first time, playing in 12 games for the International League's Pawtucket Red Sox.
A right-handed hitter and fielder, Rodriguez signed with the Minnesota Twins' organization in 2013, and enjoyed another productive year in the high-minors. Rodriguez smacked 33 doubles and 21 home runs over 121 games for the New Britain Rock Cats en route to a .482 slugging percentage that ranked fifth in the Eastern League.
Rodriguez returned to New Britain in 2014 where was voted an all-star for a third time in his career, and also received another call to Triple-A when he appeared in 10 games for the International League's Rochester Red Wings. 2015 marked the fourth all-star appearance in five seasons-this time for Triple-A Rochester-when Rodriguez belted 16 home runs and collected a career-high 80 RBI.
In 13 professional seasons, Rodriguez has a career .269 average with 234 doubles, 123 home runs, 510 RBI, 122 stolen bases, and a .462 slugging percentage over 976 games played. Now 31 years of age, Rodriguez has averaged 93 runs scored, 39 doubles, 20 home runs, 85 RBI, and 57 walks per 162 contests, while also contributing a .990 fielding percentage in 678 career games at first base.
The Goldeyes now have 18 players under contract for the 2018 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 6th.
