Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of left-handed pitcher Kevin Light and outfielder Victor Ferrante.
Light, 23, was 3-2 with a 4.86 ERA in 26 games, including five starts, with the Kansas City T-Bones last season. He was claimed on waivers by the Goldeyes from the T-Bones on August 24, 2010 and placed on the inactive list so he could complete his college education. Light spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons in the Washington Nationals system at the Single-A level. He was a combined 5-2 with 3.76 ERA in 59 games over those two seasons.
"I was a big fan of his last year working out of the T-Bones bullpen," Forney said. "Along with our two lefties in the bullpen, Zach Baldwin and Ian Thomas, I thought Kevin Light was one of the top three left-handed relievers in the league.
"What sets him apart from the usual left-handed reliever you see in the American Association is that he has good velocity. We saw him at 87 to 91 miles per hour last year with a good breaking ball. He makes our bullpen that much stronger. Our plan is to pitch him in the sixth and seventh inning area."
Ferrante, 26, hit .250 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 25 games with the Tucson Toros of the Golden Baseball League last season before suffering a season-ending broken foot injury. He batted .284 in 2009 with the Schaumburg Flyers of the Northern League. In addition to compiling 58 RBI with the Flyers, Ferrante had 21 doubles, nine triples and 18 home runs for 48 extra base hits. Prior to joining the Independent baseball ranks, Ferrante, who can play all three outfield positions, played three seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization from 2006-2008.
"Ferrante had a fantastic season with Schaumburg a couple years ago," Forney said. "He has good speed and a lot of power."
The Goldeyes now have 15 players signed for the 2011 season, including seven pitchers and eight position players.
Fish Food: The Goldeyes made a third player transaction Wednesday, trading left-handed pitcher Antony Bello to the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League for a player to be named later. In 2010, Bello went 4-7 and posted a 4.71 ERA in 21 games, including starting 15 games.
Season tickets, nine-game mini packs and new flex packs for the 2011 season are available by calling the Goldeyes office at 982-BASE (2273) or visiting www.goldeyes.com.
