Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed veteran left-handed pitcher Jhonathan Ramos on Wednesday morning.
Ramos posted a 2.32 ERA over six starts in the Baltimore Orioles' organization last year, splitting time with the High-A Carolina League's Frederick Keys and the Double-A Eastern League's Bowie Baysox. The San Felipe, Venezuela native struck out 17 and walked seven in 31.0 innings pitched. Ramos allowed one or zero earned runs in four of his six starts, and yielded three or fewer earned runs in all of them. In 2014, Ramos pitched in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization and combined for a 4.26 ERA in 76.0 innings at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
"I'm excited to add Jhonathan to our pitching staff," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney . "He brings a lot of experience to our club. Although he is just 26 years of age, this will be his 10th year in professional baseball. I look forward to watching Jhonathan perform in a Goldeyes uniform."
Ramos is entering his 10th season of professional baseball and originally signed with the Pirates as an international free agent in 2006. The 26-year-old left-hander is 40-24 with seven saves and a 3.34 ERA in 211 career games, 56 of them as a starting pitcher. In 537.0 lifetime innings, Ramos has struck out 381 and walked 138, averaging just 2.3 free passes per nine frames. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Ramos has walked two or less in 49 of his 56 career starts while never walking more than three batters in any of them. Last year marked the sixth time in nine professional seasons that Ramos has finished with an ERA of 3.46 or better.
The Goldeyes now have 20 players under contract for the 2016 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which begins May 7th.
