Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the acquisition of outfielder Donnie Webb from the Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League in exchange for the reversionary rights to infielder Cam Kneeland. Webb has signed a contract for the 2014 season.
Webb, 27, hit .297 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI in 97 games with Rockland last season. He also played in 10 games with Southern Maryland of the Atlantic League after the Can-Am League season ended. The switch-hitting Webb also stole 32 bases and was caught just five times. In the field, he made just one error on 278 defensive chances.
"We've been looking for a centre fielder and we got the guy we were hoping to get in Donnie Webb," Forney said. "He's a top-of-the-order guy. He can hit for an average, gets on base a lot and scores a lot of runs. He has a lot of speed. We were looking for some left-handed offence and he fits that being a switch hitter."
A product of Enid, Okla., Webb was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round of the 2008 MLB amateur draft. He spent four seasons in their system, including parts of two seasons at Class AAA and the majority of the 2011 season at Class AA. He was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the Triple-A Phase of the 2011 Rule 5 Draft and played the entire 2012 season at Class AA Jacksonville of the Southern League.
Kneeland was acquired from the Trois-Rivieres Aigles in exchange for Matt Rusch earlier this off-season. Kneeland had his contract purchased by the Baltimore Orioles before the trade and is going to minor league Spring Training with the O's.
The Goldeyes now have 16 players signed for the 2014 season, including eight pitchers and eight position players.
