Golden Eagles Win On Three-Run Homer In Ninth

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles (18-11) won Friday night's contest against the Newark Pilots (17-13) in comeback fashion at Colburn Park.
Down 3-1 in their final inning at the plate, Mike Kindel (Kansas State) sent a bomb over the wall in right center field for the go ahead three-run homer.
Pilots' pitcher Mike Saunders (Saginaw Valley State) entered the ninth looking for his first complete game of the season. He looked sharp against the first batter, striking out Ricky Claudio (St. Thomas). However, a walk and single put the tying run on base as with Kindel representing the go-ahead run at the plate.
Kindel had struggled against Saunders throughout the first eight innings, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Saunders finished off the ninth on the mound and collected 10 strikeouts against just one walk in his third loss.
Solid pitching and strong defense kept the score low throughout most of the game. The Golden Eagles and the Pilots each scored one run in the third inning. Clayton Brown (Tacoma C.C.) drove in the first run for Glens Falls. Newark went up 2-1 in the fifth with a RBI single from Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta).
Peter Noordsy (Wofford) took the mound in the bottom of the eighth and fanned two Pilots, but two errors allowed Chase Brown (UT Dallas) to score an unearned run and give Newark the two-run advantage.
Following Kindel's long ball in the top half of the inning, the Pilots had three more outs for a comeback of their own. Kyle Ruchim (Northwestern) moved to pitcher from second base for Glens Falls. He loaded the bases after surrendering two consecutive walks with two outs. Ruchim then caught Jacob Starnes (UT Dallas) looking for the final out and the save.
Noordsy earned the win in his only inning of work in the eighth, allowing one run on one hit. Claudio and Zac Hawkins (LSU-Eunice) each had two hits to lead the Golden Eagles.
Villa went 2-for-3 with two RBI's for the Pilots. Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara) had a game-high three hits and two runs scored.
The Newark Pilots host the Glens Falls Golden Eagles again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. for the final of their two-game series at Colburn Park.
