Albany Dutchmen News Release
The Albany Dutchmen were back home on Friday night, taking on the Watertown Wizards. Albany's own Mike Hughes (Hudson Valley) took the mound for the Dutchmen, opposed by Rob Curran (Rhode Island).
The Wizards struck first, scoring one in the top of the second on an RBI double by Jake McGuiggan (Harvard). Albany responded in the bottom of the inning, however, as Ryan Welke (NW Florida) doubled home Garren Palmer (Georgia Southern).
The Dutchmen added to their lead the very next inning, scoring three in the frame. The big hit came from Andrew Deeds (Morehead State), a two run, two out single.
The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Welke stepped to the plate with two on and two outs. Welke took Curran's pitch over the fence to give the Dutchmen a 7-1 lead.
Watertown got one back in the seventh, as McGuiggan took Hughes over the fence in left for a solo homer. They would add two more in the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late to come back and win on the road.
The Wizards' McGuiggan went 3-3 with a walk, finishing a single shy of the cycle. For Albany, Welke went 3-4 with a home run, a double and 3 RBIs, while Hughes earned the win by going seven strong innings, striking out 6 while giving up just 2 runs.
Albany is back home Saturday against Cooperstown in the annual 'Pink Game', a charity game to benefit breast cancer awareness. First pitch is 7 PM.
