Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that Director of Communications Jonah Goldberg has been named ULB broadcaster and communications executive of the year, as voted on by the field managers and United League officials.
"It's an honor to receive this award. It really shows what someone can accomplish with hard work. When [WhiteWings field manager] Eddie [Dennis] told me I had won the award, I couldn't stop smiling. I know I have grown a lot as both a broadcaster and a media relations director since I first got here fresh out of school in May 2007. I can't thank the WhiteWings enough for the opportunity and the city of Harlingen's first-rate fans for their never-ending support," Goldberg said.
Goldberg has spent three seasons as "the Voice of the WhiteWings." He now has 653 broadcasts on his resume, including 285 baseball games, 254 of which have been with the WhiteWings.
"It is great to see Jonah get recognized for the fact we already knew. There isn't a more professional announcer in independent baseball", WhiteWings General Manager Cory Dirksen said.
Although most fans know Goldberg for his work behind the microphone, he is also responsible for creating game notes and press releases for the media and program inserts for the fans. Goldberg also keeps the website updated.
"Jonah was selected for this honor because, quite simply, he has shown he is the best of some fine league public relations-radio announcers. He knows the game of baseball and explains it well, both in written form and on the air. The WhiteWings are very fortunate to have a person of this caliber," United League Director of Media Relations Jerry Deal said.
Originally from Merrick, New York, the Boston University College of Communication graduate now resides in Pharr and is also the full-time Director of Communications for the NBA Development League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He also contributes to broadcasts of the Central Hockey League's Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and Arena Football 2's Rio Grande Valley Dorados.
"Working two jobs and living about half an hour from the ballpark led to a lot of long, busy and tough days. But when it was all said and done, every day I got to go to a baseball stadium to do what makes me happy. I got to work with some great people as well. Every time I put that headset on, I know I'm in the right place," Goldberg said.
