San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas--- Two consecutive first-round wins atop the fourth-ranked Coastal Bend Thunder gives the number one seeded San Angelo Colts a chance to play for the 2009 United League Championship. A three-run seventh inning Colts rally gave San Angelo the edge, defeating the Coastal Bend Thunder 4-2.
Starting pitching continued to quiet both offenses in game two. San Angelo's Richard Salazar, and Coastal Bend's Frank James, kept the game scoreless through 2 ½ innings of play.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Thunder defense was in on the grass while the Colts had runners at second and third base. An RBI ground-out off the bat of Selwyn Langaigne brought in Hunter Jobes. The home team jumped ahead 1-0.
An infield RBI single by Dustin Smith, scoring Alfred Joseph, tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Joseph had reached on a single, and then was moved to third base by a Butch Ballez throwing error. The contest was knotted at one.
The Colts emerged out of the tie with three runs in the seventh. Butch Ballez delivered a base knock before Ronnie Gaines reached on a bunt single. On the throw by third baseman, Leivi Ventura, Ballez scored as the ball scooted down the right field line. The miscue moved Gaines to third. Jobes drove in Gaines with a booming double over the head of centerfielder, Dustin Smith. Once Paz struck out, Jobes advanced to third on a wild pitch. Frichter skied a sacrifice fly to right, plating Jobes. San Angelo led 4-1 with seven innings complete.
In the eighth, Coastal Bend responded to the challenge. Amadeo Zazueta doubled, Ventura singled and Mejia knocked home Zazueta with a base hit; but with runners at second and third and one out, Tom Martin struck out Carlos Rodriguez and Jameson Maj induced a ground ball to shortstop. The tying run came to the plate in the ninth with Dustin Smith at first but Zazueta hit a short pop fly to Rich Paz. The final out catapulted the Colts to the championship series.
New Addition Richard Salazar uplifted the Colts with a seven inning performance, scattering seven hits and no earned runs. The southpaw earned the win while former Colt Frank James suffered the loss. James went six innings giving up eight hits and four earned runs. Brett Lester allowed three hits, facing three batters; Tom Martin collected two outs, facing the minimum, including a strikeout.. The save went in favor of Jameson Maj.
Tomorrow is a day off for the ball club before the team travels for a Friday Night affair against either number two seeded Edinburg or third-ranked Amarillo. Game time is set for 7:05 P.M.
