Louisville City FC News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. Louisville City was looking to make it seven straight victories on Wednesday night when they played host to FC Montreal at Louisville Slugger Field in front of 6,836 fans, however the Canadian visitors had different ideas.
Montreal jumped all over Louisville from the opening whistle. Taking advantage of some gaps in the Louisville defense, Montreal's leading goalscorer Alessandro Riggi found some space down the left side and was wide open when he got on the end of a cross for the wide open finish. The fourth minute goal was the fastest Louisville has ever conceded.
Montreal and Riggi weren't done. In the 19 minute, Riggi again found space down the Louisville left side in a move that was nearly identical to the first goal, and finished off a cross to put the visitors up 2-0.
After Louisville worked to gain a foothold in the game, Montreal tacked on a third in the 21st minute. Striker Jacque Haman got the ball centrally in the Louisville box and avoided several attempted tackles to slam home the Montreal third.
City pushed to find a goal before the half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Montreal took a shock 3-0 lead into the half.
As the second half got underway, Louisville pressed down on the accelerator in an attempt to get back in the game. They had an excellent chance to score in the 65th minute as Illija Illic's header went off the crossbar. Fondy and Illic both had breakaway chances but Montreal Goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau made two spectacular saves.
Crepeau ended with 7 saves, all of which prevented certain Louisville goals.
After withstanding Montreal added a fourth in the 87th minute, as Victor Ndiaye made a run to the Louisville touchline and, with Louisville goalkeeper Scott Goodwin off his line, cut it back to Fabio Morelli who slammed it home for the final nail in the coffin.
The loss is Louisville City's worst ever. They will next take the field on Wednesday, August 12 against the Harrisburg City Islanders at 7:00 p.m. City's next home match will be on Saturday, August 22nd at 7:30 p.m. against the Charleston Battery at Louisville Slugger Field.
