Goaltending Battle Goes to Tucson
October 24, 2023 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
The San Diego Gulls fell to the Tucson Roadrunners 2-1 in a morning showdown at Tucson Convention Center. The loss is San Diego's first on the road this season and drops their overall record to 2-0-0-0 and 2-1-0-0 on the road.
Trevor Carrick scored for the Gulls, netting his first goal of the season at 5:22 of the second period. It extended his season-opening point streak to a fourth game, the first time Carrick recorded a point in each of the first four games of a regular season in his American Hockey League career. In addition, his 1-4=5 points through the first four games of the regular season is the second-most points Carrick recorded in the first four games of an AHL regular season, trailing only his 3-3=6 points to start the 2015-16 campaign.
Jaxsen Wiebe collected an assist on the play, recording his first AHL point and assist in his professional debut.
Josh Lopina also tallied an assist, his first of the season.
Calle Clang suffered his first loss of the season, stopping 33 shots.
Nick Wolff made his San Diego Gulls debut, going scoreless with five penalty minutes (PIM) in his first game with the club.
The Gulls will return to Pechanga Arena San Diego this Friday, Oct. 27 to face the Abbotsford Canucks (7 p.m. PT; TV: AHL TV; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
POSTGAME QUOTES
SAN DIEGO GULLS
Center Andrew Agozzino
On the loss to Tucson:
I thought we started pretty well. Like you said, it's an odd game to get ready for, but I thought our energy and focus was pretty sharp from the start. It was one of those tight-checking games where there wasn't much going on offensively.
On generating more scoring chances:
You just kind of have to stay disciplined in what your offensive systems are. The more you can kind of rely on those, the more predictability there will be and, I think, the more offense you'll create.
On the performance of Calle Clang:
He was great. Early on, he made some big saves. I think the shots were pretty heavily in favor for them early on, but he was great all night for us.
On the rookies continuing to contribute offensively:
You need that in this league, and to see those guys get rewarded, maybe not being in the lineup the first few games like Jaxsen (Wiebe), to come in (and get a point), it's always great to see.
Right wing Jaxsen Wiebe
On his first career AHL game:
I thought it went well. We came out a little bit slow, I thought, but that can happen with an odd game start time like it was. But I thought our guys did a lot better job in the second and third period, just getting our feet moving and getting pucks in and going to work. Creating energy ultimately is what you need to do in an early game like that. I thought we did a better job of that in the second and third and had our opportunities and they didn't go in.
On his first AHL point and assist:
It felt good. It was a quick transition. Trevor (Carrick) jumped in on the play. I saw him come over the blue line. Gave it to him and he stepped in the slot and ripped it in. Just capitalizing on transition plays like that and it was a good goal.
On the early start time:
It's different for sure, but it shouldn't make a difference for your preparation. You have the same amount of time to get ready for the game as you would after a pre-game nap, so you wake up and get into your routine right away. I think if you can get into the right mindset, it's just another game. Bring in the right mindset and don't let that affect your attitude towards the game because ultimately that's an excuse and we don't need that.
On his physicality:
There's a lot to prove for myself, so if I can bring energy and finish checks as much as I can and be hard to play against for the other team, that's my job and that's what I can bring to the team. I'm going to continue doing that.
