The Tucson Roadrunners start the week off with an early day slate against the San Diego Gulls for the School Day Field Trip game. With Presenting Partner Stantec and supporting partners: the Pima County School Superintendent's Office, Hughes Federal Credit Union and Delta Dental, the game will be offered free to thousands of local students who will be in attendance. The 2-1 Roadrunners look to get back on track after a 4-0 loss to the Coachella Valley Firebirds in their home opener Saturday. The Gulls also suffered their first loss of the season to the Ontario Reign on Friday but also went 2-1 overall in a three-game opening series against their SoCal rival.
Three things:
Milos Keleman has been a Swiss Army Knife for the Roadrunners in the first three games of the season. He scored the game-winning goal on Opening Night in Texas to help the Roadrunners in the 3-2 win and currently leads the team in shots with eight. Despite the tough loss on opening night, Keleman made noise, shooting on net five times and creating many scoring chances; including a shorthanded breakaway in the second period. He only has one point in three games but expect that number to climb.
In three games, the Roadrunners' second period has been the strongest, outshooting their opponents 31-21 including: 14 shots in the second period on Saturday night against the Firebirds. They've scored two goals and allowed two goals in second periods.
San Diego has three players averaging more than a point-per-game including: Pavol Regenda (4 goals), Trevor Carrick (4 assists) and 2021 second round pick Olen Zellweger (1 goal, 3 assists). As a team, San Diego's power-play is first in the early season of the AHL, having gone 4-for-9 (44.4%) but is killing penalties at just a 78-percent rate. Veteran goaltender Alex Stalock has been strong in the crease for the Gulls with a 2.04 goals against average and .945 save percentage including a 40-save performance against the Reign on October 13 in their first game.
What did they say?
"Yeah I'm looking forward to it, early start and I'm a morning guy so shouldn't be easy to get up for me...lots of kids in the building it's going to be a great atmosphere and a lot of fun."
Forward Cameron Hebig is usually a morning guy, so he is ready to go for a 10:30 a.m. puck drop.
Number to Know:
36- Number 36 Hunter Drew is expected to make his Roadrunners debut today against his former team the San Diego Gulls where he played 170 games. In those five seasons, Drew compiled 288 penalty minutes with 30 goals and 38 assists for 68 points. His 134 penalty minutes in 2021-2022 were fifth in the AHL. Last season, he ranked third with 132 penalty minutes. In six career games played at the TCC against the Roadrunners, Drew had a goal and assists with 22 penalty minutes.
