Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, Ga.- The Gnats made a late charge with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but came up short, falling 5-4 to the Augusta GreenJackets at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats lost their seventh straight game, a new 2014 season-high.
Trailing 5-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth inning, the Gnats (38-27/82-49) scored four times with two outs in the inning. The first two runs came home on a throwing error. Rightfielder Victor Cruzado then pounded a double deep to left-center to bring home the third run. Cruzado raced home on third baseman Jorge Rivero's single into right. However, the Gnats stranded Rivero, carrying the tying run, at second.
The GreenJackets (27-38/61-72) grabbed a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second against Savannah starter Octavio Acosta and added two more in the third for a 5-0 advantage.
Augusta starter Chase Johnson had a good night, firing seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts, a walk and four singles allowed. At one point he set down 11 Gnats in a row, and 18 of 19.
The Gnats will send RHP Robert Gsellman (9-6, 2.67) to the mound on Thirsty Thursday, looking to snap their skid against RHP Robert Ramer (3-4, 5.31).
It will be College Night at the ballpark and Thirsty Thursday for the final regular season game of the year.
