Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Edgardo Baez' single in the bottom of the ninth broke a 6-6 tie, pushing the Sand Gnats over the West Virginia Power 7-6 Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Monday's victory marked the third time this homestand that Savannah won in its last at-bat.
Reliever Gus Hlebovy reaped the benefits of Baez' heroics, earning his first win of the season with a perfect ninth. John Lannan pitched well in the start, scattering three runs on six hits over five innings while recording five strikeouts.
With the score tied entering the bottom of the ninth, Castro legged out an infield single and moved around to third on a single up the middle by Dee Brown. Baez followed one batter later and lined a single into left to bring home Castro, recording the win for Savannah. Baez finished the game 2-for-5 with the RBI and a run scored.
Brown led the Gnats at the dish with a 3-for-5 performance, including a double and two runs. Scott Schade drove in two runs for Savannah, finishing the game 2-for-3.
Monday's contest saw the lead change hands four times before Baez recorded the game-winning hit. Also this homestand, John Poppert homered in the bottom of the 13th to give the Gnats a 7-6 win over Lexington on Tuesday, and Tim Pahuta singled in the ninth to drive in the winning run in Savannah's 3-2 victory over the Power on Friday.
The Gnats are next in action Tuesday as they head to North Carolina for an eight-game homestand with four against the Greensboro Grasshoppers followed by four with the Hickory Crawdads. The Gnats return to Grayson Stadium on Thursday, August 10, for a quick four-game series with the Asheville Tourists.
