
Catfish split doubleheader, series with Grasshoppers

Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (18-20) earned a doubleheader and series split against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (17-19) Monday at Golden Park. The first seven-inning contest went to the visitors 6-5 but the Catfish rebounded to win the finale 3-1.
In game one the Catfish took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on the corners and one out 3B Russ Mitchell doubled to left field, scoring both runs and making eight RBI for Mitchell in the series. The Grasshoppers responded with six runs in the next four innings.
The Catfish put up a fight with three runs in the sixth inning. CF Bridger Hunt grounded into a fielder's choice that scored RF Lucas May. DH Juan Rivera then doubled to drive in LF Adam Godwin. Hunt scored the third and final run on a ground out by SS Ivan DeJesus.
RHP Arismendy Castillo (6-4) suffered the loss after giving up five runs in four innings. Despite giving up five runs in 5 2/3 innings LHP Sean West (5-4) got the win. RHP Bradley Stone earned his second save with 1 1/3 shutout innings.
In game two the Catfish tied the score at 1-1 when 1B David Sutherland hit his fifth home run in the second inning. 2B Travis Denker gave Columbus a 2-1 lead when he led off the fourth inning with his fifth home run. They added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Denker singled home Hunt.
RHP Joe Jones gave up just one run in the first four innings. The win went to LHP David Pfeiffer (2-3), who did not allow a run in one inning. RHP Ramon Troncoso earned his twelfth save with two shutout innings. RHP Ryan Tucker (5-10) struck out 10 batters in six innings but suffered the loss.
1B/DH Jason Mooneyham reached base on a walk in the first game. It made 47 consecutive games that Mooneyham reached base, a streak which ended when he went 0-for-3 in game two.
Next the Catfish hit the road for an eight-game road trip. A four-game series against the West Virginia Power begins Wednesday at 7:05pm. Then they start a four-gamer with the Lexington Legends Sunday at 4:05pm. Columbus returns home to face the Greenville Drive Thursday, August 10 at 7:00pm.
