Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA -The Hickory Crawdads pounded out fifteen hits and defeated the Braves 9-4 in front of 2,852 fans on a muggy Monday night at State Mutual Stadium.
Hickory got on the board first courtesy of a bases loaded wild pitch by Rome starter Jeff Lyman that plated Brad Corley who had reached via a double giving the Crawdads an early 1-0 lead. Rome would get their first run of the game in the fourth as Elvis Andrus led off the inning with a single and later stole second. A single by Jamie Romak would move Andrus to third and another single by first baseman Manny Rodriguez would plate Andrus tying the score at one. Rome would take their first lead of the game later in that inning courtesy of a two RBI double by Josh Morris allowing Romak and Rodriguez to score giving Rome a 3-2 advantage.
Hickory would add a single run in the top of the fifth courtesy of a perfectly executed safety squeeze by second baseman Shelby Ford evening the score at three apiece. The tie score was short lived though as Rome added a single run in the bottom half of the inning by means of a Crawdads error that allowed the speedy Ovandy Suero to score giving Rome a 4-3 lead.
Hickory continued their hit parade in the top of the sixth as they blew the game open with a five run inning highlighted by a two RBI single by Mike McCuistion and a three RBI triple by shortstop Cameron Blair giving the Crawdads a comfortable 7-4 lead. Hickory would add two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth to seal the victory for the Crawdads 9-4.
Rome starter Jeff Lyman (5-3) took the loss for the Braves as he was roughed in five and a third innings allowing ten hits and six earned runs. Hickory's Jared Hughes improved to 3-1 on the year as he tossed six innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits.
