Atlanta Gladiators News Release


Tied: Gwinnett's Brad Schell sits tied for third in points in the league with his 8 assists, while his 8 helpers also puts him in a tie for the top spot in the assists column. Meanwhile, Gwinnett's Tom Zanoski is tied for second in the league in points with 9, just 1 behind the leaders, brothers Justin and Tyler Donati of Elmira.

Helpers: Brad Schell is the only player in the league with more than 6 points but no goals.

Streaking: Gladiators Scott Mifsud and Brad Schell have opened the 2009-10 season with 5-game point streaks. Schell sits at 8 points-all assists-in the first 5 games and Mifsud sits at 7 points with 3 goals and 4 assists through 5 games.

Pepper: The Gladiators have recorded 30 or more shots in 11 of their last 12 regular season games, dating back to last season.

Pulling Away: Brad Schell continued to widen the gap to 61 points in all time Gladiators points between himself and the next closest person as he added five more assists last week. Jeff Campbell, who played with the Gladiators form 2004-2008, is the next closest on the list with 254 points. Schell now has 315 career points as a Gladiator.

Extra Time: The Gladiators have played 3 straight games that went beyond the third period, all against the South Carolina Stingrays. Gwinnett took two of those games, one in overtime and one in a shootout, while falling in overtime once.

Syracuse Transactions: Goaltender Danny Taylor was reassigned from Syracuse to the Gladiators after being called up prior to the Gladiators' season opener. Defenseman Tim Miller was recalled by Syracuse after appearing in the first 4 games with the Gladiators, recording a goal, an assist, and 19 penalty minutes.

Last Week's Games:

October 20, Gwinnett 5, South Carolina 4 - W

Patrick Galivan had 2 assists and a goal and Scott Mifsud scored just 1:09 into overtime to lead the Gladiators to their first road game of the season. After jumping out to a 3-0 first period lead, the Stingrays battled back to tie it at 4 in the third. Drew Paris added 2 assists as did Brian Kaufman. Also scoring for Gwinnett were Tom Zanoski, Matt Caruana, and Aaron Brocklehurst. Josh Johnson recorded 29 saves for the win.

October 23, Gwinnett 6, South Carolina 5 - W

The Gladiators got goals from 5 different players to send the game into overtime for the second straight night. Brad Schell would eventually score the game winner in a shootout against South Carolina goaltender Todd Ford. Gwinnett again jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to see the lead evaporate in the second, when South Carolina potted 4 goals to tie the game going into the third period. Jon Horrell made 35 saves, including stopping all 5 South Carolina shooters in the shootout for his first ECHL win.

October 24, South Carolina 4, Gwinnett 3 - OTL

South Carolina was finally able to take one from Gwinnett in extra time, as the third game in a row went past regulation time. Nikita Kashirski got one past Gwinnett goaltender Danny Taylor at the 2:48 mark of the extra frame to post the win for South Carolina. Gwinnett got a goal from Scott Mifsud and two from Matt Caruana.

This week, the Gladiators host the Charlotte Checkers on Friday, October 30 before traveling to North Carolina on Sunday November 1 for a weekend home-and-home series. The Gladiators enter the week in first place in the American Conference South Division with 7 points, 3 ahead of the Charlotte Checkers, who sit in last place in the division. However, the Checkers have only played 3 games, compared to Gwinnett's 5. The Gladiators, 3-1-1, are second in the conference only to 5-0-0 teams Elmira and Kalamazoo.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL on Friday, October 30th vs. Charlotte at 7:35 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
