
Gladiators Shutout Stingrays 5-0 in Game 1

The Gwinnett Gladiators used two goals by Tyler Murovich and 24 saves from goaltender Louis Domingue to shutout the South Carolina Stingray 5-0 in Game 1 of the ECHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a goal by Joey Haddad. Gwinnett leads the Best-of-seven series one game to none with Game 2 of the series tonight at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:05 p.m.
The Gladiators opened up a 1-0 lead on the Stingrays 10:47 into the first period on a goal by Joey Haddad. Tristin Llewellyn set up the play as he fired a shot that rebounded from the end boards right to Haddad. The Gladiators assistant captain corralled the bouncing puck and flipped it over the shoulder of South Carolina's goaltender Ryan Zapolski for the marker. Justin Bowers earned an assist on the play as well.
Gwinnett extended their lead with a pair of goals in the second period. The first goal came off the stick of Scott Arnold who squeezed the puck past Zapolski for a 2-0 lead. Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Ryan Ginand picked up a helpers on the goal at 13:39 of the second.
Murovich notched the first of his two goals with 4:46 left in the middle period. He received a rebound pass from Evan Bloodoff along the goal line, slipped into the slot and rolled the puck past Zapolski for the goal. Arnold picked up his second point of the night of the goal.
Murovich then notched his second goal 3:23 into the third period to give Gwinnett the four goal lead. The Pittsburgh, PA native slipped a backhander over the glove of Zapolski to earn the marker. Tristin Llewellyn picked up his second assist of the night on the play.
Rookie Domenic Monardo rounded out the scoring at 14:53 of the third period. Monardo found an empty hole in the slot and punched the puck into the back of the net. Bloodoff and Arnold both picked up their second points of the game with assists on the goal.
The Gladiators will return to the Arena at Gwinnett Center tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. to host the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 2 of the Kelly Cup Playoffs Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
The Gladiators are the ECHL Affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
