Gladiators Score on Last Second Play to Defeat Barnstormers, 34-33

Iowa Barnstormers (6-7) fell short in the first round playoff game against Duke City (8-7), 33-34.

This was the second match-up between the Barnstormers and Gladiators with the first match-up being in the regular season with Duke City coming away with the win. The Barnstormers came back for revenge to walk away with the win and to move on to the second round of playoffs.

Barnstormers started the game by kicking off. The Gladiators were off to a fast start, in which they scored a touchdown with a four-yard run from QB Davis Nate, putting them on top 0-7 with 12:16 left in the first quarter. After a couple of minutes of play, the Barnstormers responded with a touchdown of their own. RB Evan Owens rushed into the end zone from the two-yard line to tie the game, 7-7 with 5:26 left in the first quarter. Almost immediately, Duke City responded with another touchdown with a 28-yard pass from QB Nate to WR Dello Davis. Gladiators Kicker Kevi Goessling missed the PAT, putting the score at 7-13 with 3:03 left in the first quarter with the Barnstormers trailing. Before the quarter could end, the Barnstormers had to have the last word. QB Neal juked Gladiators defenders for 26-yards and eventually dove into the end zone to tie the game up 13-13 going into the second quarter.

The scoring slowed down for both teams. Gladiators RB Taylor Raymond rushed seven yards into the end zone to put Duke City up by seven, 13-20 with 12:05 left in the second quarter. After a tough fight to move down the field, the Barnstormers had to settle for a field goal, Kicker Gabriel Rui put the ball through the goal post to put the score at 16-20 with 7:06 left in the second quarter. Both teams ran dry through the rest of the quarter until Barnstormers Kicker Rui hit a 36-yard field goal to put the Barnstormers within one, 19-20 going into halftime.

Both teams would only score a touchdown apiece in the third quarter. With 8:52 left in the quarter, Barnstormers QB Neal's throw was deflected by Gladiators defenders but WR Carrington Thompson snagged the ball in the air and ended up scoring a touchdown to put the Barnstormers up 26-20, taking their first lead of the game. Duke City started to feel the pressure and responded with a seven-yard run touchdown from RB Raymond, where the Gladiators took the lead again, 26-27 with 3:17 left in the third quarter.

The Barnstormers started to find their rhythm in the fourth quarter with a 28-yard touchdown pass from QB Neal to WR Kentrez Bell who was wide open. Barnstormers would take their second lead of the game, 33-27 with 10:23 left in the game. With minutes left in the game. Barnstormers DB John McClure intercepted the ball and brought it out to the 20-yard line. The Barnstormers were unsuccessful in finding the end zone and missed a field goal opportunity. The Gladiators scored a touchdown with seconds left to tie the game 33-33. With no time left in the game Kicker Goessling completed the PAT to ultimately win the game. 33-34.
