INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Looking to avenge their 1-0 loss to the Indy Fuel on January 19th, the Gladiators played another tight, tough game against the Fuel, ultimately falling in OT, 3-2. Brenden Walker tied the score late in the third, while Greg Carey had another goal for himself, his fifth in the last seven games played.
After a back-and-forth first ten minutes of play, featuring a couple of missed empty nets by Indy, Gwinnett tilted the ice greatly towards their offensive end in the latter end of first period. Aided by a rare 5-on-3 power play opportunity, the Gladiators registered the last 11 shots of the period, punctuated by a 5-on-3 goal by Greg Carey at 18:10.
With Brenden Walker shooting the puck from the right point, Carey picked up the tip from Casey Pierro-Zabotel, and shot it by reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Week, Mac Carruth, off of Fuel defenseman Nick Bruneteau who was guarding the goaltender's backside blind spot.
In the second, the Fuel stormed back with 15 shots of their own. Vincent Arseneau tied the score at one by getting a puck underneath Kent Patterson at 14:49. Then just over a minute later on their third power play of the evening, Indy took the lead. After Nicklaus Lindberg's shot, Patterson made a blocker save to his right, and right to Garrett Bembridge who was crashing towards the net. Bembridge didn't even realize he shoved the puck in with his body, but the Fuel would take the goal, and the 2-1 lead.
Despite getting outshot 9-to-5 in the final frame, the Gladiators got one they needed in the waning minutes of the game for the second time in the last three games. This time it was J.P. Labardo feeding Brenden Walker from a heavily trafficked far corner out to the wide open slot. With no one around him, Walker roofed the shot over Carruth's glove hand and in at 17:46, just over two minutes remaining in regulation.
In overtime, Indy got the game-winning goal at 2:20 off of Lindberg's faceoff win. Lindberg shoved the puck on to Pete Massar, who got the lifted shot in front of Patterson. Indy has won seven straight games and has picked up points in their last nine straight. Kent Patterson made 31 saves on 34 shots, while Mac Carruth also had 31 saves on one fewer shot.
The Gladiators will now head to the southern end of the state, on to the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana to take on the Evansville IceMen for two games. The first game will be on Friday night at 8:15 p.m. EST. Gwinnett's next home game will be on Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:05 p.m. for Student Night against the Orlando Solar Bears.
