Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Kris Goodjohn tallied two goals for the Gladiators while Chris Durno added a goal and an assist to help the Gladiators past the Mississippi Sea Wolves, 6-3 on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center to take a 2-games-to-1 series lead in their best-of-five semi final series against Mississippi.
Chris Durno gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead 1:45 into the first period. The forward picked up a loose puck and jammed home a rebound past Mississippi netminder Greg Gardner for the unassisted tally and early lead.
Yannick Tremblay tied the contest up 44 seconds later on an odd man rush and beat Gladiators goaltender Michael Garnett for the goal. Lucas Drake added an assist on the goal for the Sea Wolves at 2:29 of the opening period.
Later in the first period, Cam Brown regained the lead for the Gladiators as he picked up a rebound in the slot and ripped a shot past Garnder. Jim Jackson added an assist on the goal for the Gladiators at 8:33 of the opening period.
The Gladiators lead didn't last long as Brent Gauvreau was the recipient of another lucky Mississippi bounce as the puck ricocheted off of bodies in front of the net and past Garnett to equalize the contest at two. Sergei Kuznetsov and Kerry Ellis-Toddington added the assists on the goal at 13:11 of the opening period for the Sea Wolves.
Kris Goodjohn's slap shot from the right wing face-off circle at 11:40 of the second period gave the Gladiators a 3-2 lead. Steve Slonina broke down the left wing before centering the puck along to a waiting Goodjohn for the assist on the goal.
After having a goal disallowed because a high stick batted it in, Patrick Rochon tied the contest up with a laser over the shoulder of Garnett at 14:57 of the second period. Sergei Kuznetsov added the assist on the goal for the Sea Wolves.
The Gladiators took a 4-3 lead to the second intermission on Steve Slonina's unassisted shorthanded goal at 15:42 of the second period. Slonina knocked down a rink wide Mississippi pass and beat Gardner on a breakaway with what proved to be the game winner for the Gladiators.
Kris Goodjohn added his second goal of the contest in the third period to give the Gladiators a two-goal lead. Goodjohn was able to jam a second chance off of Chris Durno's shot for the tally at 7:41 of the third period.
Brandon Dietrich capped the scoring for the Gladiators with an empty net goal with just two ticks remaining in the third period. Kevin Doell and Wes Swinson added the assists on the tally for the Gladiators to cap the scoring.
