Gladiators Down Stingrays 6-2
January 10, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators continued their road success Sunday with a 6-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays. Gwinnett also chased away some of the second period woes they have been facing, outscoring the Stingrays 3-1 in the second period. Adam Berti led the charge for Gwinnett with a four point night on one goal and three assists.
After an early deluge of shots were fought off by Gwinnett Goaltender Danny Taylor, Aaron Brocklehurst put the Gladiators on the board. Brocklehurst received a pass at the right point, walked into the slot, and fired the puck home for the first goal of the game.
South Carolina didn't waste much time getting the game tied up. Less than four minutes after the goal from Brocklehurst, Dylan Yeo put the Stingrays on the board. Yeo was able to walk in from the left point and put a shot through Taylor's legs. Gregg Johnson and Michael Dubuc assisted on the play.
Gwinnett was able to notch another marker before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. While on the Applebees power play, Drew Paris fired a wrist shot though traffic that was deflected by Matt Siddall and into the back of the net.
Gwinnet was outshot 19-6 in the first but led 2-1 after one period of play.
The Gladiators notched the next three goals of the game in the second period to jump out to a 5-1 lead. The first of those three came 5:30 into the second period, after a strong forecheck from Tim Miller gave the Gladiators a 3-0 rush in front of the net. Miller placed a shot off the pad of Peter Van Buskirk and Adam Berti knocked home the rebound increasing the lead to 3-1.
Less than two minutes later, Matt Siddall's second goal of the night put the Gladiators up by 4-1. Berti took the puck in his own zone, skated end to end, and found Siddall wide open in the slot. Siddall buried a shot into the right corner of the net for his second of the night.
Brocklehurst would add another goal of his own to stretch the score to 5-1. While on the Applebees power play, Brocklehurst found himself wide open in front of the South Carolina net. Mifsud moved the puck from the rightwing side and Brocklehurst one-timed a puck into the back of the net.
South Carolina added a goal to bring the score back to within three. Josh Godfrey wired a wrist shot from the top of the slot and over the glove of Danny Taylor to bring the score to 5-2. The Gladiators held off South Carolina for the rest of the period and owned a 5-2 lead going into the third.
Tim Miller regained the four-goal lead for Gwinnett at the 3:47 mark of the third. Once again while on the Applebees power play, the Gladiators were able to work the puck around to Tim Miller, who deposited the puck in the back of the net for the 6-2 lead and the final goal of the game.
Gwinnett was 3-5 on the Applebees power play while holding the South Carolina Stingrays to 0-4. Danny Taylor stopped 37 shots in the win for Gwinnett. The Gladiators improved to17-13-2-2 with the win while the Stingrays fell to 25-9-2-4.
