Cleveland Gladiators News Release

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Gladiators have announced that University of Akron product and Gladiators defensive end Almondo Sewell has signed with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.

In his first season with the Gladiators, Sewell (6-1, 295, Akron) appeared in nine games, including eight starts. He totaled 19.5 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, five quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles.

"It's hard to see 'Mondo go, but this is an opportunity that he deserves," Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn said. "We wish him luck and know that he'll perform up in Canada the way he did for us this season."

"I appreciate the opportunity to play for the Gladiators," Sewell said. "I am glad I came here to play and it made me a better football player for sure."

The Gladiators have placed Sewell on the OTHER LEAGUE EXEMPT list - and maintain his AFL rights. The Gladiators current roster stands at 22 of the allowed 24 active players.

The Cleveland Gladiators are part of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena organization and also owned by a group led by Cavaliers Majority Owner and Quicken Loans Founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert. The group also owns and operates the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League playing at Quicken Loans Arena and the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League playing in nearby Canton, Ohio at the Canton Civic Center.
