Philadelphia Soul News Release

PHILADELPHIA (June 5, 2012) - The Arena Football League has announced that Soul fullback Derrick Ross (6'0, 240, Tarleton State) has earned AFL Playmaker of the Week honors for his performance against the Orlando Predators on Saturday, June 2.

Ross helped propel Philadelphia to victory over Orlando with 84 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. The 84 yards broke the franchise single-game record for rushing (Ross set the previous record of 74 yards against Georgia on April 7, 2012). His five rushing touchdowns were not only a franchise record, but also the most any player in the AFL this season.

"What's most impressive is that teams know it's coming and he still performs at a high level," said Soul head coach Doug Plank. "He's a great option for our offense to have and really makes it easier on the quarterback and the passing game. He hits the line hard and fast, but I think his best asset is just his determination."

Ross's 84-yard performance also helped him become the 10th player in AFL history to reach the 1,000-yard plateau for a career. By accomplishing the feat in only 29 games, he became the fastest in League history to reach the mark. Ross currently leads the League in rushing yards this season with 425. At his current pace, the MVP candidate is set to break his league single-season mark (625) for a consecutive year. He only needs 198 more yards to set that particular bar even higher.

The Philadelphia Soul (9-3) hit the road once again this week to take on the Eastern Division rival Milwaukee Mustangs Friday, June 8 at 8 p.m.
