Las Vegas Gladiators News Release
Las Vegas, NV, February 16, 2007 - The Las Vegas Gladiators add OL Victor Leyva (6"5, 305, Arizona State) and OL Phil Hawkins (6"5, 330, Houston).
Victor Leyva spent three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (2001-03), and the second half of last season with the Los Angeles Avengers of the AFL. He graduated from Arizona State in 2000 where he earned All Pacific-10 Conference honors.
"Victor was a player that we were curious about as a staff" said Head Coach Danton Barto. "We knew that he was a 5th round draft pick of the Bengals, we also knew he played late for the LA Avengers and had some arena experience. We already like his progression just over the past few days he has been here".
Phil Hawkins has spent time in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers, he has also played in the NFL Europe with the Frankfurt Galaxy. He is entering his first season in the Arena Football League, but will be a positive addition as he is a big pass protector.
"Phil is a guy who has been to two NFL camps and NFL Europe. We think Phil has a chance to be a good player for us. We had to bring in a guy when we lost Tupe Peko. I don't believe you replace a player of Peko's caliber, but we think Phil is going to be able to get the job done" commented Coach Barto.
Training camp is open to the public and practices are held outside the Orleans Arena. The first practice begins at 9:30-11:30 and the second practice goes from 2:45-4:45pm.
The Gladiators will kickoff their 5th season on the road March 4th against the Austin Wranglers at 1pm. Season tickets for the 2007 Las Vegas Gladiators home schedule are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Las Vegas Gladiators office at 702-731-4977.
