February 19, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The Columbus Destroyers, presented by Germain, will host the Philadelphia Soul on Monday, April 23 on "Pro Football Hall of Fame Night" at Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. with the game being televised nationally on ESPN2.
All Destroyers season ticketholders will receive a coupon redeemable for complimentary admission to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, have the chance to win prize giveaways courtesy of the shrine and purchase special Pro Football Hall of Fame merchandise. In addition, the Pro Football Hall of Fame traveling exhibit will feature a display that highlights the Columbus Panhandles. The Panhandles, a pro football power in the early 1900s, were charter members of the NFL in 1920.
The Hall's exhibit focuses on the team's early years and will feature memorabilia from the six remarkable Nesser brothers who at various times regularly played together for the Columbus team. Ted Nesser played halfback and tackle; brother, John, was the quarterback; Phil, played tackle; Al, was an end and guard; Frank, was the fullback; and Fred, was both an end and halfback. Beginning in 1920, only three of the brothers, Frank, Phil and Ted, played regularly for the Panhandles. However on December 2, 1921 the Nesser family made NFL history when brothers John and Fred rejoined the team to play against the Louisville Brecks. Never before or since has five brothers played together in an NFL game.
Additional special events surrounding the game will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is unveiling its first-ever exhibit dedicated to chronicling the past, present and future of the Arena Football League on February 26. The AFL, which kicks off its 21st season on March 1 with 19 teams, is the nation's fastest growing sports league. The exhibit will feature both AFL historical and interactive elements that are designed to illustrate the league's fast-paced action.
